Illustration Workshop, The Foundling Museum

A day-long workshop working with Looked After Children and their family groups.

Using the current exhibition of Quentin Blake's Illustrations as inspiration, we explored throughout the day different aspects of Illustration, character design and storytelling.

Everyone left with their own unique character in a frame, also having made scenes based on captions, which will be put on display at the museum.

The group told us they thought the workshop was:

"Fun, exciting, creative, inspiring, challenging, surprising, enjoyable, educational and spectacular!"

To link with Grayson Perry's model ship (the Tomb), I made ship templates for the group to make and decorate individually. We used themes found in the exhibition as inspiration for the designs.

As part of an event relating to Francesca Simon's book, 'The Sleeping Army', I wrote and ran this workshop for three groups of 30 children.

We made giant chess pieces based on the Lewis Chessmen, and exhibited them on their own giant Chess board.

Olympic Medal Making, Cheltenham Literature Festival

With the British Museum, to tie in with the launch of Helen East's book, 'How The Olympics Came To Be'.

In this workshop Helen and I guided the children through stories and stages of Olympics old and new, including the making of their own gold medal, based on their individual designs.

There was a small presentation ceremony at the end for all the Gold Medallists present.

During this workshop, I asked the children to imagine the best place ever. We made maps to help us get there, and model cameras to take photos on arrival. Then, using a variety of mediums, we created 'photographs' to tell the story of our trips.

Viking Coin Making Workshop, The British Museum

As part of a 'Viking Invasion', I wrote and led a workshop for children to make their own version of a Viking coin.

Looking at the penny issued by King Cnut, children designed both faces of the coin first - one with a portrait of themselves as a Viking Leader, and the other with a symbol which represented something they like or believe in.

We then embossed our 'silver' with the designs, and went through the steps to make a personalised Viking coin.

As part of the Afghan Season at the Museum, I wrote and ran this drop-in workshop in which children made their own 'portable treasures' inspired by Nomadic Artefacts excavated at Tillya Tepe or 'Golden Hill'.

Afghan Gold Workshop, The British Museum

This workshop was based on ancient treasures of Afghanistan.

Using the golden treasures of ancient Royal Nomads as inspiration, the groups made 'Portable Treasures' which packed flat and were easy to carry away, just as the Nomad's gold had been.

I designed a template to start the children off, which gave them the basis for an animal design.

We displayed the finished pieces on our own 'Golden Hill' (the excavation site) for all to see.

I have taught Life Drawing Classes for Adults of mixed abilities at the Papered Parlour in Clapham, and continue to teach at Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham.

Classes are varied and focus on 'learning to look' as well as techniques for drawing successfully.

A Monster for the Ministry

'Solipsistic Pop' is a bi-annual Anthology of Comics and Illustrations which features my work.

Volume one was launched at the ICA in November 2009 and I did some 'Live Drawing', filmed and projected onto a big screen, as part of the night's events. It was fantastic to be drawing live and to be part of the energy exchange. I'm going to make sure I do it again.

Solipsistic Pop

Solipsistic Pop is a biannual anthology designed to spotlight the best in alternative Comic art from the UK.

Book one was compiled last year and released in November, and Book two is due for release in April 2010.

It's a varied, beautifully put together publication including a wide range styles and techniques. There's a couple of pieces I've done in both books.

A Frieze making workshop I wrote and facilitated as part of the British Museum's Olympia Weekend.

four Groups of 40 children and adults worked on rotation, and each group's section was joined with the others on completion. All of us stayed the night in the Museum as part of the adventure!

For this Workshop, the focal point was an Ethiopian painting of the Crucifixion of Christ.

I wrote and lead a workshop which encouraged children to interpret the emotions painted by the artist.

I made worksheets on which they 'filled in' details of different emotions.
